The Club’s origins came from the Bellerive Football Club which commenced in 1884 and following the second world war in 1944 became the Clarence Football Club. The club has a rich history and has won 27 premierships since 1884 with nine premierships as Bellerive, fifteen as Clarence and three Women’s Team premierships.

The Club is the reigning Tasmanian State League premiers having won back to back flags in 2009 and 2010.
As well as the Club having a proud record of achievement over many years in Tasmanian football and over the years a number of players have won individual recognition wining the William Leitch Medal for the best and fairest in the Tasmanian Football League (TFL) and the State-Wide League with well known names such as Hamish Yaxley, Trevor Sorell, Stuart Spencer, John Richmond, Bob Lucas, Garry Williamson, Scott Wade, Danny Noonan and Mathew Jones were all winners of the medal. In 2009 the Tassie Medal was introduced for the Tasmanian State League Best and Fairest award and Brett Geappen the senior coach won the medal in 2010.
The Club has also provided many representatives for TFL, SFL and Tasmanian State Representative teams. The Club’s involvement in nurturing local talent has been the stepping stone for the VFL and later AFL recruitment of many outstanding players such as Royce Hart, Gavin Cooney, Stephen Fry, Colin Alexander, Chris Riewoldt, Danny Noonan, Paul Holdsworth, Bradley Plain, David Lewis, John Chivers, Scott Sutcliffe, Michael Young, Arthur Budd, Terry Mayne, Rohan Andrews, Tom Davidson, Cameron Thurley, Justin Sherman, Sam Iles, Jarrod Garth, Heath Neville, Jack Riewoldt, Jeromey Webberly, Daniel Archer, Josh Green and Ian Callinan.
The club administration and playing facilities are located at Bellerive Oval in Derwent Street Bellerive, in southern Tasmania. Bellerive oval is a multi purpose venue with Test, One Day and Twenty Cricket played during the summer and currently AFL State League Men and Womens Football, and national under eighteen and under sixteen AFL football. From 2012 two games of AFL Football will be played at the ground for a three year period involving the North Melbourne Kangaroos.
The club is one of ten member clubs of the Tasmanian State League (TSL) which comprises two teams per club - Seniors and Colts. The colts is a hybrid competition made up of fourteen under eighteen players and ten overage players up to the age of twenty one years but with provision for players up to twenty three years on a restricted per game basis – for example a player returning from injury.
The Club also includes a women’s team which participates in the Tasmanian State League Womens competition
The Club has a separate Junior Club which provides opportunities for young boys from under eight to under sixteen to learn and play our great game.
Each club in the TSL is allocated a development Zone for which it receives a financial grant from AFL Tasmania and is responsible for Talent Identification and delivering a Development Program for the youth in their zone
Clarence Zone covers the following areas:-
The area east of the Derwent River from the Rokeby Fire Station and in a direct line north to and including Brighton, Pontville and Mangalore and south of the Bridgewater Bridge.
This zone will also include Cambridge, Campania, Richmond, Woodsdale, Colebrook and Oatlands. The line to be considered the eastern boundary will be the Rokeby Fire Station and Woodsdale.
This zone will also include the suburb commonly known as Tranmere indicated by a line south from the Rokeby Fire Station to Droughty Point.
